We decided to build the lighthouse and Mr and Mrs Grinling's cottage. We then found some string and connected the two with the wire! Next we made a basket to send down the wire.
We put on a show!
Hedgehog class decided to take the characters they had been cutting out, and re-enact the story. They made tickets, posters, all the different parts of the story, and even set out some chairs for the audience!
Talk for writing
We found Mr Grinling's picnic basket, and opened it up excited to find the delicious lunch Mrs Grinling had packed him. But instead we found smelly mustard sandwiches to scare off the seagulls! We all smelt the mustard and agreed that the seagulls wouldn't want to eat it. Next we headed outside and found the lighthouse with the wire leading from Mrs Grinlings kitchen. We even found Hamish the cat who had been sent down the wire to scare off the seagulls. Then we flew around like the seagulls trying to get to the lunch.
Outside we worked in groups to create Mr Grinlings lunch in Mrs Grinlings kitchen. We made lots of different types of food, and even some that we thought would scare off the seagulls!
Lighthouse keepers role play
Inside, we used the lighthouse role play to act out the part of the stories. In groups the different characters were picked, and then they retold the story. Another activity was to cut out the characters and retell the story. Some children made the wire to link the pictures together! Next there was drawing the different parts of the story, and lastly, exploring the lighthouse story sack.
